If you’ve ever watched and listened to Newfoundlanders when we meet each other but are NOT in our beloved province, you’ll hear us refer to Newfoundland and Labrador as: “Home.” We don’t mean: “home,” we mean: “Home,” with a capital ‘H’.
“Oh, you’re from Home.”
“Yes, sir. Born an’ bred.”
“From town?”
“No, by’, from Conception Bay.”
“Oh, yeah.”
“You from town.”
“Well, sort of. I was born in St. John’s [which is town] but went to school in the Goulds.” [pronounced: ghouls]
“Oh. Sure, that’s town, isn’t it?”
“Mmmm…not to the people who live there.”
The most common questions/comments Newfoundlanders ask each other when they live and encounter each other on the mainland:
Where are you from? [specific community/town]
You get Home much?
How long have you been gone?
Did you go to MUN? [MUN=Memorial University of Newfoundland]
Think you’ll ever move back Home?
When are you going Home next?
It’s uncanny how predictable we are with each other. It’s like line dancing: you know exactly where it’s going to go and…you guessed it, buddy. We’re all goin’ there together!
