I saw this message painted on a roof today. RETHINK SPACE — painted in green. I was on the Toronto subway crossing the Bloor Viaduc. It’s my only glimpse of the outdoors while ON the subway for my morning commute from the Danforth or Greektown. (Although I’m moving Saturday: St. Paddy’s Day. Better to move the morning of and not the morning after!)
So, who paints a sign like that. It’s not free to paint a message on a roof. Is it a company that sells space, or an environmental group? Someone went through the trouble of putting that message in view while subway riders cross the Don Valley. Curious. What does it mean: Rethink Space? Should we be rethinking our headspace — that’s the first place I start — our living space indoors, our parking spaces, our lawns or gardens, or is it big picture: where do we put ugly manufacturing plants and power plants and garbage disposal sites. Maybe there’s a rethought solution out there? Maybe.
I’m not convinced…yet.
But every time I look deep into the Don Valley, I’ll likely rethink some space in my life, thanks to that roof painter.
I’m a size 8, maybe a 37 in Europe, but it’s my foot. And this is my footprint. The buzz now in the environmental cause is in trying NOT to leave a big footprint. If you dump garbage, you are leaving a big footprint. If you read online instead of printing something out, you’re not leaving much of a footprint at all. And so, I figure blogging is the best way for me to establish mine without hurting the environment or anyone. If you come back and read my footprint regularly, you might be tingled or tortured, delighted or devastated, blissful or bereaved. I can’t control your reaction, only the content.
